I used the White Lightning Chain Cleaner tool to clean a Brompton bicycle chain. This isn’t the best performing chain cleaning tool, but it does a descent job and cost less than $10. The chain cleaning tool is designed to work on bicycle’s with a conventional rear derailleur, so it didn’t exactly work as designed on the Brompton bicycle. The tool has a hanger to latch onto the rear derailleur to hold the cleaning tool in one spot, while the drive chain is rotated and moves through the tool. Since the Brompton bicycle has a unique and proprietary derailleur, the hanger on the chain cleaning tool doesn’t fit and couldn’t be used as designed. However, you are able to hold the tool still with one hand and rotate the chain with my other hand. I filled the chain cleaning tool with Simple Green cleaning solution to clean the oil and dirt off the chain. I ran the chain through the tool for 1 minute and it did a descent job cleaning the chain. I than put clean water in the chain cleaning tool and ran the chain through for 20 seconds to help remove the cleaning solution. I than wiped down the chain and sprockets and let everything dry. I used Tri-Flow Aerosol lubricant to lubricate the chain. I always lubricate the chain from the inside and make one pass over the entire chain for each side. Aerosol lubricants are probably my favorite to use because they have great coverage, and make it easy to cover all critical parts of the chain.
